The Argent Sisterhood

The Argent Sisterhood is a community of Puellae Magi formed by Aoi Hikarizaka upon filling in the power vacuum left by Rui Tomatsu’s death. Its goal appears to be creating and fostering a safe haven for Puella Magi incapable of fending for themselves, with Aoi providing weekly “healing sessions” to cleanse the Soul Gems of any local Puellae Magi who need it. After a series of incidents, however, the group enters a bitter conflict with the 6th Bureau, whose authoritarian control over the city and aims of militarizing its Puellae Magi clash with the Sisterhood’s ideals.

Later development reveals that the Sisterhood’s inner circle has its own plans for Mitakihara, seeking to cleans it of all forms of evil and violence through the resurrection and subsequent control of the gargantuan Witch, Walpurgisnacht.

Aoi Hikarizaka is a charismatic Puella Magi with the ability to manipulate grief, which allows her to heal the souls of others, cleanse the Soul Gems of fellow magical girls and even summon their Witches under her control. She also boasts six distinct, feathered wings, which render her capable of flight, but also harbour a dark secret. Initially using her powers to seek out powerful Soul Gems she can use to empower her wings and strengthen her abilities, antagonizing several of the city’s Puellae Magi in the process, she returns to Mitakihara upon the death of Rui Tomatsu with seemingly more noble intentions, offering her services to anyone who needs them and taking care of the mostly helpless magical girls left behind after the implosion of Rui Tomatsu’s clique. Along with her new friends, she sets up a tightly-knit community, taking up residence in an abandoned mansion in the woods, which they turn into their own little slice of paradise. What most members of the commune do not know however, is that this too is just a part of the plan Aoi has been working on for years — to cleanse the world of all oppression and evil, no matter the cost.

Having lost her parents during the Walpurgisnacht attack four years ago, Aoi was taken in by her uncle, Mitakihara police commissioner, Saburo Hikarizaka, a corrupt and wicked man who made a fortune selling recordings of his physical abuse of young girls, including his ward. Aoi openly admits to killing her uncle in retaliation when he set his targets on her friend, causing the 6th Bureau to issue a warrant for her arrest the moment she returns to Mitakihara. Realizing the Bureau is out for her blood, and led to believe it is willing to go through her friends to get to her, Aoi subtly nudges her friends towards all-out war with the Bureau. After her clique raids the Bureau’s headquarters, she reveals to Hanako the true extent of her vigilantism, as she did not just kill her uncle, but several fellow Puellae Magi she claims were pure evil, in order to claim their Soul Gems for herself.

At her core a fundamentalist, Aoi’s ideals and actions make her friends go to the ends of the earth for her, while those who oppose her extremist beliefs find her to be a danger of an unprecedented kind. Yet as black-and-white as her worldview is, as mysterious and complex is her personality. In the company of her friends, she is generous, modest and polite, sworn to protecting those she cares about from any and all harm. Those who get in her way, however, are quickly shown a different side of her — one that is cold, cynical and disingenuous. Aoi tends to hide her true colours wherever she goes, often playing the part of an innocent, humble little girl to throw her conversation partners for a loop. It is unknown, however, whether anyone knows her real personality, let whether she is good, evil, or anything beyond that.

Mirai Mizutani is a former member of Mitakihara High’s track and field team and one of Aoi’s most loyal friends. She is a follower, rather than a leader by nature, and though kind and enthusiastic, she tends to prefer a supporting role for herself, staying in the background. In spite of this, she is the Sisterhood of Argent’s de facto liaison and recruiter, charged with looking for people who need their help and showing them the way to the clique’s hideout in the woods. Like many of her friends, Mirai was forced to make a contract on Rui Tomatsu’s behalf without much knowledge of what she was getting herself into and ended up in Aoi’s care as she is too inexperienced as a Puella Magi to fend for herself. Despite her lack of combat skill, however, Mirai does possess a particularly powerful ability — she can copy the unique abilities of other Puella Magi near her, though doing so requires a significant supply of magicl energy.

Miho Kawakami was a haughty, popular member of the track and field club who is trying to take over as Mitakihara High’s “queen bee” after Niko Segawa’s prolonged absence. Like many of her clubmates, Miho was bullied by Rui Tomatsu into making a contract, left to fend for herself after the bully’s death and saved by Aoi. As a result, Miho was highly loyal to Aoi and heavily involved in recruiting new Puellae Magi to her cause — in spite of her often callous treatment of others. Extremely paranoid ever since Rui’s control over the track club ran out of hand, Miho refuseed to acknowledge her responsibility for anything she did while under Rui’s thumb and often lashed out against anyone she fears might threaten the peace she enjoyed as a member of Aoi’s circle, including the Newspaper Club and especially Yasu.

On the other hand, Miho absolutely idolized Chiemi for killing Rui and consistently pleaded for Aoi to launch an attack on the 6th Bureau in order to set Chiemi free. She eventually got what she wanted and played an integral role in the raid, using her magical ability to manipulate fabric to create identity-concealing uniforms for the members of the Sisterhood, but ultimately lost her life upon its execution, her Soul Gem irreparably damaged by a stray rubber bullet. While her death disheartens a significant portion of the Sisterhood’s members, it further radicalizes those in Aoi’s inner circle, especially Miho’s best friend, Kotori Ito, convincing them to put kick their plans into overdrive.

Akari Fueki

Akari Fueki, like many of Rui’s victims, joins the Sisterhood of Argent as a key member after Chiemi takes the fall for her murder of Rui Tomatsu. For more information on Akari, check Rui Tomatsu’s clique.

Kotori Ito

Kotori Ito is Miho Kawakami’s best friend and another loyal member of the Sisterhood of Argent, who harbours some dark secrets of her own. She eventually reveals her true identity as “Fujiwara no Karasu” of the Fujiwara clan. For more information on Kotori, check The Birds of Fujiwara.

Seia Yamano is a sardonic member of the Sisterhood of Argent and one of the few in Aoi’s clique who was not a victim of Rui Tomatsu’s machinations. Instead, she met Aoi through her father, who worked as a judge on the case prosecuting Aoi’s uncle for his crimes. Born with a visual impairment, she made a contract with Kyubey to wish for “sight”, though the exact details of her powers are unknown, as Seia is still struggling to adapt to her new ability to see.

Ueno Asaharu is an impressionable, earnest young girl who was Hanako’s very first friend. The two met online because of a shared love for video games, and Ueno spared no effort in getting Hanako into her favourite franchise — the Empire Souls series. Unbeknownst to Hanako, however, Ueno met Aoi Hikarizaka and was introduced by her into the world of Puella Magi. Yet after Ueno made her contract; Aoi claimed her Soul Gem for herself to power one of her wings, effectively killing her physical body. Ueno’s death sent Hanako spiralling into a deep depression, which eventually caused her to become a Puella Magi herself.

After Aoi returns to Mitakihara several months later and founds the Argent Sisterhood, Hanako finds out to her surprise that her friend is still alive. After the Sisterhood claims Rui Tomatsu’s Soul Gem to replace Ueno’s in Aoi’s wing, Aoi decides to exhume Ueno’s body, allowing her Soul Gem to restore it and bringing her back to life as a reward for Hanako’s loyalty. Having legally been declared dead, Ueno currently resides with Aoi at the Sisterhood’s secret hideout, where she steals everyone’s hearts with her baking skills and magical ability to create sweets out of thin air. It is unknown, however, whether she knows of the clique’s true objectives.
