The Family

The Arashi family, commonly referred to as simply “the Family”, was an organized crime syndicate that dominated the Mitakihara underground during the bubble economy of the 1980s. Initially an affiliate of a more powerful yakuza family operating in the neighboring city of Kamihama, the Family became an independent organization in 1983 — upon which it gradually started abandoning many of the traditions and rituals of the yakuza entirely, opting for a looser and more meritocratic structure.

Though the organization initially fashioned itself a semi-legitimate and chivalrous force dedicated to maintaining order and preventing the city from being taken over by more ruthless criminals, its lack of internal discipline led to several conflicts with smaller local syndicates bankrolled by the Conductors. These feuds eventually escalated in a fully-blown gang war, which ended up decimating both organizations. While the Family continued to exist for several more years, keeping the lights on through petty rackets and money laundering, the syndicate was eventually reduced to but a handful of members and disbanded after the death of its leader, Kaito Arashi.

Kaito Arashi was Yui Arashi’s estranged father and the head of the Family, or at least what remained of it. When he inherited the organization from his father Garou, the power struggle with the Conductors had already cost the organization the overwhelming majority of its assets and members. Nevertheless, Kaito managed to keep the lights on, shifting the Family’s focus towards semi-legitimate practices and as such, managing to stay under the radar for several years while posing as an inconspicuous receptionist.

Kaito’s past caught up with him, however, when his daughter Yui came back into his life. Having become a victim of Maestro Velare’s final gambit to restore the Conductors to their former glory, Yui not only provided Kaito with the opportunity to finally settle the score with his old enemies, she also showed him a potential way to resurrect his beloved wife. His ensuing pursuit of revenge ended up pitting him against his daughter, however, as the two clashed over their differing views on resolving the feud between their Family and the wretched Conductors. In the end, Kaito’s irresponsibility, rash decision-making and single-minded lust for vengeance left him with no choice but to acknowledge his own part in escalating the gang war that consumed his life when the Conductors’ biggest mistake — the Puella Malefica, Kae — comes after him to enact her own revenge. In a final shot at redemption, he dies protecting his daughter from Kae’s rampage, bringing an end to The Family once and for all.

In spite of his often flighty behaviour, Kaito was a man weighed down by his past, unable to outgrow the tough-talking delinquent persona he adopted during his family’s glory days, and to reckon with the consequences of his actions. His wife’s death locked him in a perpetual desire to recreate his past, clinging to decade-old feuds, leading him to perform several highly questionable and irresponsible acts, from desperate attempts to restore the Family to its former status over abandoning his daughter to even entering a relationship with a 17-year-old girl just because she reminded him of Yuma. In spite of the poor decisions that end up becoming his undoing, however, Kaito did have an honourable side to him, strongly valuing camaraderie and sharing an intimate friendship with his closest confidante, Sai.

Yuma Amaya was Kaito’s fiancée, a short-tempered and passionate former delinquent, who was killed by René Colère of the Conductors at the height of the war between latter organization and the Family. Her death sent Kaito on an obsessive quest for revenge that would continue even after the war ended and René fell into a coma years later, condemned to live out the rest of his existence in the Dreamscape. Kaito eventually pleaded with the warden of the Dreamscape, Nebbia Piccolo, to allow him to follow his nemesis into this mysterious realm, and learnt that Nebbia had granted the same privilege to his fiancée when she had died years prior.

This caused Kaito to spend his nights in the Dreamscape for years, searching for Yuma and fighting René, not just out of a still unsatisfied desire for revenge, but also to claim René’s Artifact for himself and use it to bring his beloved back to life. Yuma eventually reveals herself, yet not to Kaito, but to Yui instead. Though initially disappointed to hear Yui is looking to walk in the Conductors’ footsteps, rather than destroy them, Yuma eventually reconciles with her daughter and accepts her fate when Yui elects to resurrect Cecilia rather than her, locking her in the Dreamscape forever.

Choi Min-Jung, best known by her Japanized name Sai, was an experienced Puella Magi who spent the final years of her long life serving as Kaito Arashi’s bodyguard. Often stoic and tight-lipped about what her life was like before joining the Family, Sai’s sole purpose in life was to aid Kaito in his goals of restoring his organization to its former glory. As a result, very little is known about her past, aside from the fact that she was born in what is now known as South Korea and likely, like many of her fellow countrymen, ended up working for the yakuza after ending up in Japan following its occupation of her homeland.

Sai claimed to be several hundreds of years old, as she had lived for so long as an undying Puella Magi — her soul separated from her body — that she eventually stopped ageing and her Soul Gem stopped accruing corruption altogether. This left her both incapable of turning into a Witch, but also gradually stripped her of her magical powers, leaving her as something she would come to refer to as a “Ghost”. Nevertheless, age eventually did catch up with Sai, her soul slowly withering away until only her empty shell of a body was left — still looking the same as it had looked for countless decades. Yui eventually recovered her body and used it as a vessel to resurrect Cecilia Ambrosi.

Satomi Yasuda

Satomi Yasuda is a runaway girl who was taken in by Kaito against his better judgement. The two enjoyed a brief and highly questionable fling, which ultimately ended when Satomi — jealous of Kaito’s continued pining for his dead fiancée, stole his car and many of his belongings, and allowed Nebbia Piccolo of the Conductors, under the control of the malicious Puella Malefica Kae, to orchestrate Kaito’s downfall. For more information about Satomi Yasuda, see Other characters.

Other members of the Family

“Pops” Garou Arashi was the founder of the Family and its leader for most of its heyday. He eventually went clean and retired, becoming the proprietor of a gym downtown, leaving his criminal organizations in the hands of his son. Garou eventually ended up raising Kaito’s daughter Yui, but lost his life when Yui was forced to fight him to the death as a part of Maestro Velare’s machinations.

Kaede Arashi was Garou’s wife and Yui’s grandmother. Though she abhorred violence, she took care of the Family’s financial and legal affairs. Her maiden name was Sasaki, making her a relative of Hanako’s. She died of natural causes at some point before the beginning of the story.
