The city of Mitakihara is home to various other major and minor characters, including unaligned characters and the families of the main characters, which are described on this page.
Kyubey

| Age | Unknown, possibly immortal |
| Occupation | Incubator |
| Likes | Unknown |
| Dislikes | Unknown |
| Pastimes | Wandering around town, looking for girls to make a contract with |
| @WhiteIncubator |
Kyubey is the incubator assigned with making contracts and creating Soul Gems in the area around Mitakihara. Though it takes the form of a cuddly creature and often speaks in a friendly, often excited tone of voice, its understanding of human morality is limited, generally dismissing the suffering the contracts it grants often end up causing and downplaying the value of human life. True to the stated creed of its people, Kyubey only serves a single purpose — to recruit as many Puella Magi as it can, and then harvest the energy released when these Puella Magi turn into Witches to prevent the heat death of the universe. It will not hesitate to deliberately omit information or work together with malicious forces like Rui Tomatsu to achieve this goal.
The Sasaki family
The Sasaki family is a closely-knit, well-to-do family who live in a large apartment in the centre of town. Katsumi Sasaki is one of the city’s most respected lawyers, while her husband Ren works as a software engineer for the American tech conglomerate Kazoo. Nevertheless, the two often take time out of their busy schedules to take care about their daughter Hanako.
Katsumi Sasaki

| Age | 45 |
| Occupation | Defense attorney |
| Likes | Courtroom dramas, a neatly organized office space |
| Dislikes | Percolator coffee, judges who arrive late to their own courtrooms |
| Pastimes | Playing volleyball, looking out for Hanako |
| @Katsumi_Esq |
Katsumi Sasaki is Hanako’s mother, and a renowned defence attorney focusing on discrimination lawsuits. Nevertheless, her top priority in life remains the happiness of her daughter. Katsumi is a caring mother who nevertheless has an unconventional approach to raising Hanako, as she pushes Hanako to think independently, take responsibilities for her actions and deal with the consequences herself. Due to her strong sense of justice, she is also quite protective of Koharu, doing whatever she can to ameliorate the girl’s challenging home life, up to and including allowing Koharu to live at her house for extended periods of time.
Much of Katsumi’s trust in Hanako can be attributed to the fact that she has known about Hanako’s secret life as a Puella Magi from the very start, including the many risks that come with it. She once knew a girl who made a contract with Kyubey and wished for Katsumi, who was born with nothing, to be able to live a happy life. That wish, however, ended up being the girl’s undoing, and Katsumi was forced to witness her friend turning into a Witch. As a result, she tends to stay out of supernatural affairs, all the while doing whatever she can to keep Hanako safe, up to and including dealing with questionable organizations like the Birds of Fujiwara.
Other members of the Sasaki family
Ren Sasaki is Hanako’s father and Katsumi’s loving husband, who shares her vision on raising their daughter. In order to spend more time with his family, Ren tends to work from home, working on developing the latest version of his employer’s operating system for smartphones. In his free time, however, he is looking to develop an app that he claims will revolutionize mental healthcare in Japan.
The Shirahara family
The Shirahara family has lived in a tiny apartment in one of Mitakihara’s most deprived, run-down neighborhoods ever since Akihito Shirahara was demoted at work and his wife Hikari went missing. As Akihito works long days to make ends meet, most of the family’s domestic obligations fall on his oldest daughter Midori, who takes care of her younger siblings Koharu, Chiaki and Kayo.
Midori Shirahara

| Age | 20 |
| Occupation | Waitress, bartender, shop clerk, college student |
| Likes | Cocktails, music, silly hats, thrift shops, her siblings |
| Dislikes | Mushrooms, bugs, secrets |
| Pastimes | Working at the café, working at The Bends, working at home |
| @MidoriShirahara |
Midori Shirahara is a second year social studies major at the University of Mitakihara and the girl behind the bar of The Bends, Mitakihara’s coolest hangout spot and live music venue. She is also Koharu Shirahara’s elder sister. Bubbly, cheerful and empathetic, just about the only thing Midori has in common with her younger sister is their frankness. Despite her carefree exterior, however, she has a lot of responsibilities to take care of, combining various jobs and her studies with having to take care of three siblings at home. Due to her father’s busy work schedule, Midori is often the sole responsible member of her household, leading her to lose her patience rather easily.
Midori came into contact with the supernatural way earlier than her sister did when she was a witness to a monster attack on The Bends, which was stopped by a group of Puella Magi. Because of this, she is to a certain extend aware of what her sister and her friends get up to, though she generally stays out of their affairs and, like her sister, treats them with a healthy helping of skepticism. She also has a rather low opinion of her mother, whom she accuses of having abandoned the family because of Koharu’s autism. Even after Hikari returns, Midori cynically interprets her mother’s amnesia as another ruse to evade responsibility, and isn’t fully convinced that the memory loss is magical in nature until Koharu and Niko reveal the truth about Hikari’s disappearance to her.
Hikari Shirahara

| Age | 43 |
| Occupation | Freelance journalist (formerly) |
| Likes | Puzzles, riddles, old computers, whiskey |
| Dislikes | Lies, deadlines, loose ends, stress |
| Pastimes | Investigating the Conductors (formerly), taking care of her family |
| N/A |
Hikari Shirahara is Koharu’s mother, a freelance journalist who went missing four years ago on the eve of the Walpurgisnacht attack. She is idolized by Koharu, who has dedicated her life to finding out what happened to Hikari — though her legacy is not unanimously positive. While Koharu remembers her as an dissident journalist who used thorough research to uncover truths and emancipate the downtrodden, Midori claims she was little more than a two-bit reporter writing puff pieces for local newspapers. Nevertheless, Hikari loved her job but had a hard time dealing with the stress of it, especially in combination with her daughter’s condition. As a result, she would often neglect her familial duties and work for nights on end on an investigation into the Conductors, an organization she believed to have its hands all over Mitakihara’s criminal underground.
This investigation would end up causing Hikari more trouble than it was worth. On the eve of Walpurgisnacht, she went to what she assumed to be the Conductors’ base of operations and witnessed the mysterious foursome sealing the Puella Malefica they had created into the Troubadour’s Masque. Unwittingly, Hikari was pulled into the Dreamscape along with Kae and became a part of the seal holding her. Years later, when Kae is set free, so is Hikari, and she is taken in by the 6th Bureau. It quickly turns out, however, that Hikari has lost some of her memories as a result of her long imprisonment in the Dreamscape — in particular her memories of Koharu. After spending some time at the hospital, she returns home a changed woman, trying to be the mother she never could be before her disappearance, but without her memories of one of her children, this has proven to be quite the challenge.
Other members of the Shirahara family
Chiaki and Kayo Shirahara are Koharu and Midori’s younger twin siblings. Chiaki is mouthy and inquisitive, while Kayo is quieter and more innocent. Both are big fans of the Sunday morning magical girl anime Lovely Cure and its heroine Cure Vanilla, who bears a striking resemblance to Hanako.
Akihito Shirahara is the patriarch of the family, who works as a salaryman at a local company. Soon after the disappearance of his wife, Akihito made a careless mistake at work, causing him to be demoted to the very bottom of the company hierarchy. As a result, he is almost never at home, leaving early and getting back late as overwork estranges him from his children.
The Hayama Family
After losing her parents, Kohaku Hayama enlisted in the Japan Self-Defense Forces in order to find a new family, along with the only family she had left — her younger sister Shinju. The two have lived on military bases ever since, first in Yamagata prefecture, then in Shizuoka, and now in Mitakihara, where the JSDF have established a permanent presence following the mysterious incident four years ago.
Kohaku Hayama

| Age | 25 |
| Occupation | Sergeant in the JSDF |
| Likes | Robots, helicopters, uniforms, sports |
| Dislikes | Locker room talk, cafeteria food |
| Pastimes | Working out, watching old sci-fi movies |
| @KohakuHayama |
Sgt. Kohaku Hayama is Shinju’s older sister and legal guardian, currently stationed at the JSDF base in Mitakihara’s Minato district. She is an inconspicuous, but disciplined woman who nevertheless cares deeply about her more gung-ho younger sibling, in whom she has fostered a passionate admiration for the JSDF and its work keeping the country safe. She is but a humble sergeant during the day, but at night, Kohaku patrols the streets as a Puella Magi, relentlessly hunting Witches in the cities where she is stationed to keep its citizens safe.
Though she became a Puella Magi on an impulse, accepting Kyubey’s offer as soon as he offered to bring her sister back to life after an unfortunate accident, she takes her duties very seriously and serves as a mentor to both her younger sister and her friends after Shinju makes a contract of her own. Kohaku’s loyalty becomes a tough balancing act, however, when the 6th Bureau seizes control over the Self-Defence Forces’ activities in Mitakihara — meaning that Kohaku’s two selves are now supposed to work for opposing sides in a conflict about to engulf the city.
As a Puella Magi, Kohaku is strictly combat-oriented, equipped with futuristic power armour and significant ballistic firepower owing to her experience as a soldier. She also possesses the unique ability to summon humanoid “puppets” to fight alongside her, which take on the form of her family members. While Kohaku initially has three familiars fighting alongside, her — two looking like what are assumed to be her deceased parents, and one looking like Shinju — she eventually learns that the familiars are, in fact, these people’s actual souls. Consequently, she returns Shinju’s soul to her own body, allowing her sister to become a Puella Magi herself.
The Rinju Family
The Rinjus are middle class, suburban family with a troubled history and a dark secret. For generations, men with Rinju blood have had a history of abusive behaviour, while women have had the potential to becoming immensely powerful Puellae Magi when making a contract with an incubator, but consequently also Witches who could destroy the world. This trait is later revealed to be no coincidence, but a curse, bestowed upon the family’s blood by magical forces beyond their understanding.
Esther Rinju was Alice’s older sister. Reliable and gentle, though traumatized by the abuse she suffered at the hands of their father, Esther was one of the first girls to make a contract with Kyubey after the incubator first came to Mitakihara. She lost her life at the hands of the Puella Malefica Anisa Nobunaga, who killed Esther as a part of her plan to turn Alice into a Witch and destroy the world.
Marian Tokai (née Merriweather) is Alice’s kind but easily overwhelmed mother, and following her divorce and subsequent marriage to Rikuto Tokai, Yuzuki’s stepmother. She is a bit of a gadfly, but due to her stressful job as an air hostess, also prone to stressing out and drinking too much. She was born in Manchester and moved to Japan only after meeting Tomokazu, making her daughters half-English.
Tomokazu Rinju is Alice’s stern father and Marian’s ex-husband. He used to be a hard-working salaryman, but as the years went by, his sense of morality eroded and he became abusive towards both his wife and his daughters. Following Esther’s death, Marian mustered up the courage to report his misdeeds to the police, and with the help of prosecutor Rikuto Tokai, managed to get him convicted. His current whereabouts are unknown.
The Tokai Family
The Tokais stopped being a family when Rikuto and his wife got divorced months before the fateful storm destroyed the part of the city where they used to live. Though the two have gone their separate ways, they both appear to have found happiness on their own terms, even as their daughter continues to struggle with their separation even years after.
Rikuto Tokai is Yuzuki’s father, and following his remarriage to Marian Rinju, Alice’s stepfather. He claims responsibility for the dissolution of his marriage to Matsuri, and fights hard to make up for it every day. As a criminal prosecutor, he helped Marian press charges against her (ex-)husband, which lead to them falling in love. Rikuto is quite passionate and hot-blooded, and like his wife, enjoys teasing his daughter to no end.
Matsuri Tokai is one of the city’s most accomplished psychiatrists. Hanako is one of her patients, and she is well acquainted with the Sasakis as a result, though her relationship with Yuzuki, of whom she lost custody, has become strained.
The Yasuda Family
The Yasuda Family is one of Mitakihara’s most prominent families, and has been in charge of the Yasuda business conglomerate for generations. Even though the conglomerate has been accused of strong ties with organized crime several times in the past, no investigation has ever turned up concrete proof, allowing the family to amass vast fortunes for itself over the years. After the passing of its patriarch, Naota Yasuda, the family is looking to expand its powers into other sectors of public life.
Naota Yasuda
Naota Yasuda was the chairman of the Yasuda conglomerate, a Machiavellian and corrupt businessman who lead a double life as a member of the mysterious Conductors. He was the great-uncle of Alice Rinju and the grandfather of Satomi Yasuda, and has passed away recently, leaving the conglomerate in the hands of his son Masato. Form more information about Naota Yasuda, check The Conductors.
Satomi Yasuda
| Age | 17 |
| Occupation | Musician |
| Likes | Punk, strawberry sundaes, pranks, boys’ love manga |
| Dislikes | Censorship, stuffy businessmen, her parents |
| Pastimes | Composing and performing music, causing trouble |
| @ShioriNakae |
Satomi Yasuda is initially introduced as the highly eccentric and cheerful frontwoman of Sugartits, a provocative, but up-and-coming punk band in Mitakihara’s underground music scene. Behind her mask of goofy and often inappropriate behavior, however, Satomi is an emotionally disturbed girl whose self-destructive lifestyle make her a target of Kyubey’s machinations.
As the granddaughter of Naota Yasuda, chairman of the powerful Yasuda conglomerate, Satomi grew up in a wealthy, but conservative household along with her twin brother Satoshi. After Satoshi passed away, however, she ran away from home and took on the pseudonym “Shiori Nakae”, drifting from one living place to another and picking up all the ill-advised habits that come with this kind of lifestyle. Her attempts to build a life on her own terms quickly go awry, however, when Satomi’s obnoxious and improper antics cause her to burn every proverbial bridge she builds, including with her rivals Alice and Yui.
After running away from yet another poor life choice, Satomi runs into Cecilia Ambrosi, who, having seen what lies in Satomi’s future, decides to set her up. Satomi is arrested and placed in a youth correctional facility, after which she is reunited with her parents once more. This surprises Satomi, as her parents had never even bothered to look for her or report her as missing when she ran away. Now, the situation has changed, however. Shiori’s grandfather has passed away, and her father expects her to attend a prestigious university to prep her for a role in the company he has inherited.
The revelation that Satomi is related to both the Rinju family — whose bloodline traditionally brings forth incredibly powerful Puellae Magi — and a former Conductor, also immediately puts her on the radar of Kyubey, who approaches her with the prospect of getting whatever she feels entitled to if she makes a contract to become a Puella Magi. Satomi has different plans, however. Despite being under house arrest, she starts sneaking out at night and performing again, this time under the name Girl Next Door. Much to her surprise, a song she produces ends up going viral, and she is invited to sign a record deal. Unfortunately, she will need her parents’ permission to make her dreams come true. When everything she wants seems to slip out of reach yet again, Kyubey appears to her once more…
Other members of the Yasuda family
Masato Yasuda is Satomi’s father and the current chairman of the Yasuda conglomerate. Stern and callous like his father before him, he greatly values discipline and decency, which often puts him at odds with the rebellious Satomi. A powerful and influential businessman, he is running for mayor of Mitakihara on a “law and order” platform, looking to work together more closely with the 6th Bureau in order to keep the city safe. Though the Bureau is initially reluctant to co-operate, this changes after Nagano is arrested and Kobayakawa becomes director of the Mitakihara branch.
Mizore Yasuda is Satomi’s mother. Like her husband, she will not take “no” for an answer and is particularly invested in wearing her wealth and social status on her sleeve, clad in traditional garments wherever she goes. She takes particular offense to Satomi’s colorful language.
