Through the 6th Bureau, the various Puellae Magi at Mitakihara High come into contact with an older generation of characters whose lives have been marked by Kyubey’s activities in their city. Having played a major role in the mysterious “incident” that struck the city four years ago — in reality an attack by the gargantuan Witch known as Walpurgisnacht and a string of heinous actions carried out by the deranged Puella Malefica, Anisa Nobunaga — they now serve as mentors to Hanako, Shinju and the others.

Alice Rinju is a college student majoring in performing arts and an aspiring musician who regularly performs at The Bends, a popular bar in Mitakihara’s university district. Behind her innocuous appearance, however, Alice hides a long history with the supernatural that has left scars both physical and emotional on her weary self. Surly and immature at her worst, resourceful and witty at her best, and melancholic and wry at everything in between, Alice has gone through a lot of hardship to end up at where she is now — nevertheless proving to be an invaluable ally and surrogate older sister to the younger generation of Puellae Magi, and to Hanako in particular.
Because she has suffered from diabetes and mental illness her entire life, Alice has always been extremely reliant on others. Her history is one of one co-dependent relationship after another — first with her sister Esther, who died after becoming a Puella Magi and exposing her family’s darkest secrets, then with Shou Nobunaga, a boy haunted by a spectre from his past, come back to torment him and everyone he held dear as a Puella Malefica, and finally with Yui Arashi, who stood by her even when Anisa Nobunaga’s all-encompassing hatred took everything from Alice, up to and including her sanity. At the eve of Walpurgisnacht, four years ago, Alice’s life changed forever, but she and Yui have been inseparable ever since, and saved each other’s lives more often than they can count.
It is through Yui’s connections with the mysterious Conductors that Alice solved the mystery of her cursed bloodline at the root of all of her troubles and came into the possession of the Chairman’s Baton, and Artifact that previously belonged to her great-uncle Naota Yasuda. Nevertheless, Alice has no powers of her own. Once upon a time, she did carry within her a soul with the potential to annihilate the world if it were ever to be claimed by an Incubator — a curse that left a bloody trail throughout her family’s history and made Alice the catalyst for Anisa Nobunaga’s plans to bring humankind to an end. By confronting her own shortcomings, Alice was able to lift the curse and guarantee a peaceful future for herself and her descendants — yet in the process, she stripped herself of any and all potential to ever become a Puella Magi herself.
Meeting a new generation of Puella Magi she can be of use to, has helped Alice come to terms with her past. Nevertheless, her trauma keeps affecting her in various ways, and she has become heavily reliant on a Puella Magi named Aoi Hikarizaka, who can heal souls using her peculiar abilities, to remain stable. Now that Aoi is being sought by the 6th Bureau, Yui has been stripped of her powers and Anisa Nobunaga has been revealed to still be alive — albeit in the guise of the benevolent Shinobu Nagano — Alice is struggling to decide what role she will play in the ongoing struggles about the city’s future.

Yui Arashi, known as Yui Amaya before her father resurfaced, is ostensibly little more than a good-for-nothing slacker. In reality, however, she is an immensely powerful Puella Magi and the lynchpin at the centre of a lot of the supernatural events that have plagued the city over the years, now using her considerable power and influence to steer her peers towards a better tomorrow. A short-tempered punk with a heart of gold and wisdom beyond her years, Yui quite accidentally befriended Alice in high school and has never left her side since. The two share an intense bond that has survived may a world-shaking event, which has strengthened their resolve to make their city a safe haven for Puellae Magi where conflicts are resolved without bloodshed.
Nevertheless, Yui has come a long way. Originally living with her aloof grandfather and competing in illegal fighting rings to make a living, Yui exchanged her violent lifestyle for an even riskier one when the mysterious man running the ring, Maestro Velare, forced her to kill her grandfather as a means of training her to be a warrior who could take on Witches without having to make a contract with Kyubey. Upon finding out the truth behind the Maestro’s manipulative actions, Yui went on a bloody rampage against Velare and his organization, the Conductors. In this struggle, she found an invaluable ally in the wandering soul of Cecilia Ambrosi, Velare’s deceased sister, which she absorbed into her own body to become a Puella Magi of unfathomable power.
Together, Yui and Cecilia aimed to lay the lost souls of the Conductors and their victims to rest and eventually managed to kill the Maestro, though not without the realization that merely taking Velare out of the equation would not undo the evils he had committed. Over time, Yui comes to realize that violence will not erase the Conductors’ sins and vows to find a more constructive solution to solving the mess they left behind in the form of the amalgamate Puella Malefica known as “Kae”. This determination forces Yui to team up with the mysterious 6th Bureau and puts her at odds with her own father Kaito — the Conductors’ arch-nemesis — culminating into an all-or-nothing battle against Kae that sees Yui briefly turn into a Puella Malefica herself. Following through on their determination, Yui and Cecilia manage to defeat the Conductor’s final challenge without resorting to lethal force, only for the Bureau to put a bullet through Kae’s head in their stead, and Cecilia vanishing without a trace.
With Cecilia gone and both her body and soul heavily damaged, Yui is forced to take a step back, which leads her to dedicate herself even further to her vow of pacifism. When the Bureau goes to war against a group of Puellae Magi led by Aoi Hikarizaka, Yui steps down from her position and begins resorting to diplomacy and negotiation, rather than violence, in order to mediate between the warring factions. Her convictions are challenged once again, however, when a fight between Hikarizaka and the Bureau’s director, Shinobu Nagano, reveals the latter to be none other than Anisa Nobunaga, the woman who tortured and nearly killed Alice four years ago, and the former to be more than willing to eradicate anyone standing in her way.
Yui’s powers as a Puella Magi are complicated. When she and Cecilia shared a single body, Yui had access to two distinct “forms” — her own form, which fights with a golden staff and uses lightning-based attacks, and Cecilia’s, which grants her access to Cecilia’s power of observation and omniscience, and fights with a silver staff. Following the Oracle being resurrected into a body of her own, Yui loses access to these powers, but retains the ones her own wish granted her — the ability to manipulate souls themselves. This ability grants Yui access to a suite of diverse abilities, from the ability to recover destroyed or scattered souls, undo other Puellae Magi’s transformations or “read” souls, allowing her to interpret their intentions and learn their histories. Her powers are not without their limits, however, as they consume a lot of Yui’s energy and various circumstances can lead to certain people being entirely immune to them.

Yuzuki Tokai is an college student majoring in psychology, a friend and dorm-mate of Yui and Alice, and one of the most experienced Puellae Magi left alive in Mitakihara. She is also Alice’s stepsister, her father and Alice’s mother having married shortly after the two girls graduated high school. Though serious, awkward and uptight, she greatly cares and worries about virtually everyone she knows, she has a tendency to isolate herself from others for extended periods of time and take on burdens too heavy for her to carry alone. When she was in high school, her preoccupation with others came to the point where she, upon learning about Kyubey, actively sought the Incubator out and made a contract with him. Consequently, she considers it her responsibility to protect innocent people from Witch attacks and spends most of her free time on patrol, staying out of the interpersonal conflicts her peers tend to get involved in.
Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean Yuzuki doesn’t have her fair share of problems on her own. Four years ago, she was the Puella Magi who defeated Walpurgisnacht as it was rampaging around town, but her noble actions accidentally ended up orphaning a young girl named Aoi Hikarizaka. When Yuzuki enters college, Aoi resurfaces and, as a means of both testing her newfound powers as a Puella Magi and getting her revenge, subjects Yuzuki to a series of cruel ploys and experiments until suddenly disappearing. Now, Aoi has returned yet again and seems to be using the findings of her feud with Yuzuki in an attempt to enact her brand of justice on a far larger scale — so Yuzuki might have to step up to the plate yet again.
As a Puella Magi, Yuzuki’s powers are is strictly defensive, focusing on hiding her identity and protecting people — as per her wish. As a result, she can create impenetrable energy bubbles, which are initially rather small, but as she gains more experience in battle become so big they can cover entire areas. With some creativity, Yuzuki has also found ways to use her powers offensively, for example by using her barriers to cut objects and adversaries in half. When Yuzuki first made her contract, her own introverted personality was deemed unfit to protect her friends, leading to a second personality being born within Yuzuki. This personality, which called itself “Ikana Shitomi” was blunt, brash and bloodthirsty, though Yuzuki eventually managed to suppress it by finding the strength in her own kind-hearted nature.
