Niko Segawa is a popular, mouthy senior at Mitakihara High and member of the track and field club. Hidden behind her abrasive exterior, however, is an insecure girl who often relies on hysterics to make sense of situations she has no grasp on. Haunted by a a fragile ego and a continuous feeling of inferiority to her peers, she is prone to jumping to conclusions and naive to a fault, which makes her an easy target for machinations of her former friend and teammate Rui Tomatsu. In order to exact vengeance on Koharu Shirahara of the Newspaper Club, Tomatsu leaks nude pictures of Niko to the entire school and frames Koharu for the act. Even Niko herself believes this lie, and is eventually coerced into making a contract with Kyubey for Tomatsu’s sake, a decision that gets her unceremoniously killed.

When she is brought back to life by Shinju, something in Niko changes. She becomes restless and after Tomatsu tries to kill her again and Shinju saves her once more, disappears as the Newspaper Club deals with the aftermath of Tomatsu’s murder. She eventually resurfaces, revealing that her resurrection damaged her soul, which was subsequently healed when she unintentionally wandered into the domain of the slumbering Conductor, Nebbia Piccolo. Seeing the potential for great growth in Niko, Nebbia begins training her to be his successor, granting her access to many of the Conductors’ secrets and even to his luxurious penthouse in the centre of town, which Niko’s friends and allies start using as their base of operations.

Though her connection to Nebbia makes her a valuable asset to the alliance of Puellae Magi dedicated to cleaning up the Conductors’ mess — the Puella Malefica named Kae — Niko continues being plagued by self-loathing and a desperate need for validation, not helped by her intense feelings of guilt towards Shinju, who used a wish for Niko’s sake. Unable to satisfy her desire to pay Shinju back and stricken by grief over Nebbia’s eventual passing, Niko becomes a target for Kae in her struggle to claim the Dreamscape as her own. Eventually, however, Niko is able to wrest back control over the Troubadour’s domain by confessing her feelings to Shinju and gaining ownership of her former mentor’s Artifact, as well as the Conductor title “the Diva”.

As the new master of the Dreamscape, Niko’s powers within the realm of dreams are all but limitless, making her both responsible for the wandering souls still currently residing within, as well as able to salvage and pull new souls into the Dreamscape to heal or be preserved beyond the death of the body. With some help from Koharu and Nebbia’s former associate René Colère, Niko eventually gains the ability to tap into the collective consciousness of the souls contained within her realm, a power she vows to use to restore the memories those who returned from the Dreamscape have lost.

Mei Tsukuda is a second-year student at Mitakihara High and a member of the track club, making her one of the initial cogs in Rui Tomatsu’s machine. Made to make a contract with Kyubey, wishing for yet another meaningless thing to empower her manipulator, she fights at Rui’s bidding during her struggle against Hanako, Shinju and Koharu — until one fateful day, when Rui goes too far and pushes Mei’s girlfriend to the point where she becomes a Witch. By the time Mei comes up with a plan to escape, however, Rui has been killed. With nowhere left to go, no means of surviving on her own, and no one by her side, Mei turns up on the verge of both death and succumbing to her Grief at Yui Arashi’s gym downtown, where she is saved by the elder Puella Magi.

Over the following days and weeks, Yui takes Mei under her wing, teaching her how to fight and defend herself using the unorthodox magic granted to her from Rui’s wish — the ability to manipulate sound waves through the use of an enchanted megaphone. As a result, however, Mei has lost touch with most of the other survivors of Tomatsu’s machinations — though they still look at her as one of their own. This puts Mei in a weird position as both an outsider and an insider, making her a natural fit for the role Yui has in mind for her — as a mole in the circle Rui’s former victims have formed around the mysterious Puella Magi Aoi Hikarizaka.
