Prologue

Their lives all having irrevocably changed by encounters with the supernatural, three girls meet and become friends, while the mysterious Kyubey offers them an unimaginable deal — in exchange for granting them a single wish, he will make them magical warriors sworn to protect the city against evil.

Part I: One is None

As they take their first steps in a brave new world of magic and miracles, Hanako, Shinju and Koharu soon find out how deep both the rabbit hole and the extents of human cruelty can go. The lines between their civilian and secret lives begin to blur when an ambitious adversary enacts her revenge, spinning a web of machinations that drags dozens of innocent victims into Kyubey’s abyss.

Intermission I

With the city tumbling from one crisis into the next, a mysterious watcher recalls tragic events long unresolved, and foretells the disaster boiling under a scarred surface.

Part II: To Burn the World

With the government becoming aware of the mysterious goings on around them, Hanako, Shinju and Koharu see their world both expand and come under threat when an apocalyptic conspiracy from the city’s past brings them into contact with a more experienced generation of Puellae Magi and their allies. The clock is ticking, but who can be trusted, and who can’t?

Intermission II

Following the climactic events of the last few weeks, the various inhabitants of Mitakihara take some time off for themselves as they try to retain the semblance of a normal life, confront their personal demons and make decisions that will affect their personal lives greatly.

Part III: The Argent Sisterhood

When fear and political upheaval start throwing Mitakihara into chaos, the city’s Puellae Magi and its authorities are pitted against one another. As two charismatic adversaries with dark secrets and tremendous influence plunge their world into civil war, Hanako, Shinju and Koharu are forced to question their ideals and their loyalties — even to one another.

Intermission III

With anything resembling a status quo in the city blown asunder, Yui consults with old enemy and allies alike to consider past, present and a future that seems murkier than ever.

Part IV: The Balancing

It is the fate of every Puella Magi to become a Witch. But the Puellae Magi of Mitakihara seem to have found ways to escape the inevitable, and Kyubey is none too pleased. Vicious and uncaring, the Incubator’s enforcers descend onto a city turned into a no man’s land, burdened only with a single task — to eradicate anything and anyone that gets in the way of how things ought to be.

Intermission IV

In an otherwise ordinary gym lies Mitakihara’s secret to success, and some might say who know better, its very heart. That heart, however, still aches with loss, and her hand almost as heavy to make up for it. “Never again,” she often says these days, “begins now”.

Part V: In Melancholia Clad

Time has passed, and the apocalyptic embers of the Balancers have begun to fade. Mitakihara is rebuilding, slowly but surely. Life is gradually returning to normal. Schools are reopening, as are businesses. Buildings are being reconstructed, or torn down, reimagined and repurposed. Wounds have begun healing, both physically and emotionally. However, deep scars still remain.
