Chapter 11

Realizing Japan is at the verge of war should Aoi choose to launch another volley, Hanako rushes to Aoi’s mansion to probe her friend about the unexpected scope of the attacks. Aoi assures her that any further attacks will wait for now, as her ruse to frame the Bureau worked better than expected: The Japanese government has cut all ties with the Bureau, causing it to be disbanded immediately, and all troops withdrawn. With the city devolving into complete anarchy, Aoi gathers her followers to put the second part of her plan into motion. Much to Hanako’s surprise, most of the other members of the clique are still there, albeit almost all reluctantly, but without other options as they still require healing and lack Grief Seeds. Aoi appeals to them by comparing her targets to Tomatsu, and makes it clear that she is willing to continue healing them as long as they don’t attempt to stop her.

The next day, schools decide to close, citing the danger on the streets as their reasoning for ordering all students to stay home. Niko awakens from a four-day slumber trying to mitigate the damage upon realizing that everyone in Mitakihara had been pulled into the Dreamscape. She calls up Shinju to inform her about what is happening, but soon finds her penthouse under attack from home invaders — victims of Shiori’s, having been compelled to wreak havoc onto the city — and has to abandon it, returning to her family home, only to find it empty and her father missing.

In the meantime, the relationship between Hanako, Shinju and Koharu further deteriorates. Frustrated at Hanako’s attempts to live a normal life despite her involvement in Aoi’s crimes, Koharu nearly gets into a physical fight with her, only for Yosuke to interfere, while Shinju’s attempts to mend the broken pieces only further radicalize Hanako in her belief her friends have abandoned her. Seeing Hanako go down this path, Ueno enlists Koharu and Shinju in persuading Hanako of this, revealing her intentions to turn on Aoi if that’s what it’ll take to save her best friend. Though initially cynical, Koharu is eventually convinced by Yosuke to work together with Ueno to solve “whatever drama she’s got going on with [Hanako]”.

Ueno is not the only member of the sisterhood to start getting cold feet, however. Seia Yamano has gotten similarly worried about Aoi’s violent intentions and decides to reach out to Yui. She reveals that the sisterhood has been stockpiling food, building seals around the windows and doors, and bringing in large amounts of potted plants. When Yui shares this information with Yuzuki and Kohaku, the three suspect Aoi of planning to hide the Walpurgisnacht, with mansion and all, at the bottom of the ocean.

Via Kohaku, Shinju runs this theory by Koharu and Ueno, but Koharu doesn’t believe that Aoi is going to hide underwater. The three conclude that it is likelier that Aoi is headed to space, and realize they don’t have much time left to stop her. Looking for a way to bring Hanako back over to their side, the trio hit upon their former idea of investigating the roots of the conflict between Aoi and the Bureau — one of Aoi’s friends allegedly being attacked by a Bureau soldier — in hopes of tempering Hanako’s opinion or perhaps even exposing Aoi as having acted dishonestly. Ueno, having been with Aoi at the time, offhandedly reveals Mirai was the one who claimed to have been attacked by the Bureau soldier.

At night, Hanako is wandering the streets, barely aware of the fact that the city is devolving into anarchy. When she is accosted by a group of hooligans, she initially confidently brushes them off, but when she realizes she is out of magical energy and is in real danger, the hooligans get vaporized by one of Walpurgisnacht’s beams. The attack is followed by Aoi’s voice telepathically echoing through her head, calling on any who still support her to join her as she removes herself to outer space in orbit around the Earth, where she can launch an attack from and on anywhere on the globe. She asks Hanako to join her.

Having sensed the impact of yet another Walpurgisnacht attack, the older Puellae, with Yamano and Mei in tow, hurry towards its location in Kohaku’s car. As it gets ready to ascend, however, the Witch catches wind of her pursuers, and begins trying to rain destruction onto them from afar. Eventually, Mirai even uses abilities she copied from Hotaru to teleport the car away, revealing herself as the instigator of the conflict and delaying Yui’s team while Aoi prepares for launch. Meanwhile, realizing she has no time left to warn Hanako about Aoi’s radicalization possibly being based on a lie, Koharu sneaks out of the house, only to be picked up by none other than Yuna, alive and well, who — with Ueno and Shinju already in her car — offers to give her a ride, revealing her true identity as an operative of the Bureau.

With Yuna’s help, Koharu’s team makes it to the mansion as well, bringing their accusation against Mirai that she faked the incident that led to the conflict with the Bureau. Hanako arrives too, however, and to the surprise of her friends, admits that the whole conflict being a false flag operation doesn’t matter to her at all, as she is still convinced that Aoi did and is doing the right things. Nevertheless, Aoi does express disappointment at Koharu’s revelations and tells Mirai she doesn’t need to help anymore. She then welcomes Hanako aboard the Walpurgisnacht, which at this point has absorbed the entire mansion into its body to create a spacecraft, and prepares to depart, leaving Mirai behind. Enraged, Mirai attacks Shinju, is entangled by a black sludge, giving Shinju the chance to grab Koharu and Ueno, turn the three of them into water and sneak aboard the Walpurgisnacht before it takes off.

The older girls witness Walpurgisnacht blasting off into space and think all is lost, only to get interrupted by Shinobu reappearing, dropping an unconscious Mirai at their feet as a sign of goodwill. Yuna arrives a short while later, and along with Shinobu, explains that they don’t have long to catch up with Aoi before Walpurgisnight reaches orbit and starts raining down her justice onto the planet. Along with whatever loyal Bureau officers that remain, the two then provide the girls with a prototype airship that should allow them to catch up with Aoi before she escapes the stratosphere, themselves staying behind to intercept any potential attacks from the Witch.

Mulling over her choices in an isolated wing of the fake mansion inside Walpurgisnacht as it flies off into space, Hanako is confronted by her friends, who try to sway her back to their side. In the meantime, Yui’s team catches up with Aoi and starts fighting Walpurgisnacht in a desperate attempt to destroy it before it can launch an attack on the entire world.

To be concluded…
